Writing about oneself is never entirely comfortable, and I have no wish to turn this page into a CV in prose. So perhaps the simplest place to start is here: I’m Sabine Weiten, a German-born author living in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

I moved from Germany to Scotland in 2006 and have lived and worked here ever since. For many years, words were also my profession: I founded Speaking World in 2007 and worked as a translator and editor, primarily between German and English.

Those years taught me an enormous amount about language — its rhythm, its quirks, the things that disappear between one language and another, and the importance of choosing exactly the right word. Eventually, though, I found myself wanting to use all of that rather differently.

So many languages, so little time

Languages have always fascinated me — their rhythms, their quirks, and the way meaning subtly shifts between cultures. I still love that precision, but these days I’m more likely to spend far too long choosing the right words for my own characters.

After years of translating other people’s stories, I finally began telling my own.

Moving on

Life, of course, rarely travels in a straight line. Alongside my work with language, I now run a small tea business here in Scotland and write stories set in the places that have become part of my life.

My first novel, Attaboy, was published in 2025. More books are on the way, including stories that wander from Scotland’s west coast to Ireland and beyond.

Bog Myrtle Press is now home to that writing — stories about ordinary people whose lives have a habit of becoming rather less ordinary, told with warmth, humour, a strong sense of place, and just enough trouble along the way.
